Guitar pickup wiring handover: what an OEM buyer should request

Request a model-specific pickup lead map, circuit drawing and versioned installation record before approving an OEM sample.

A pickup sample can fit a guitar and still leave the installer without a reliable connection plan. Before approving a private-label pickup, request a diagram for the exact lead and control configuration being quoted. The handover should identify every conductor by function, show the intended switch and control connections, and state which instrument setup was checked.

This is separate from physical installation fit. A mounting photograph cannot tell a technician which conductor is hot, ground or a coil connection. Nor can a color from another manufacturer’s drawing. Seymour Duncan’s wiring guidance explicitly warns that manufacturers use different wire color codes. Use another brand’s diagram to understand the questions, never as the wiring specification for a SoundSentry candidate.

Freeze the exact pickup and control arrangement

Identify the candidate pickup, neck or bridge position, lead format, target guitar, selector switch, volume and tone controls, output jack and any requested coil option. Ask for the supplier’s current drawing and revision for that combination. A general “humbucker wiring” picture is insufficient when the ordered lead or control layout differs.

The SoundSentry pickup category is a place to select a candidate. Its product images do not establish conductor colors, pot values, polarity or a supported switching scheme. Those details belong in the model-specific technical handover.

Handover item What the document should identify Buyer check
Lead map Each conductor’s function, shielding and connector or bare-end form Match the physical sample and label
Circuit drawing Pickup position, switch states, controls and output jack Trace each intended sound or switch position
Mechanical reference Mounting and lead exit for the selected variant Compare with the target guitar
Revision Drawing, sample and packaging or instruction version Confirm all three refer to the same configuration

Validate the diagram on a named instrument

Have a qualified installer wire the sample according to the proposed drawing, then record the guitar, controls, switch positions and observed output. If two pickups are combined, document the intended combined position and compare what is heard with the approved drawing and test brief. Do not diagnose polarity from listening alone. A single successful installation supports only that recorded configuration; it does not prove that the pickup can replace any model with wires of the same colors.

When a change is proposed, compare the new lead map and circuit drawing with the approved version before updating dealer instructions. Photograph the finished installation and keep the test record with the sample identifier. This gives support staff a reference when a dealer later reports silence, noise or an unexpected switch result.

Carry the handover into the RFQ

Send the target guitar, pickup position, requested lead format, control and switch layout, installation responsibility, markets, instruction languages, expected quantity and any existing drawing you are authorized to share. Ask the supplier to mark what is supported by the selected sample and what would require a different configuration or new test. Send the pickup brief with those details.

Can the installer copy wire colors from another pickup brand?

No. Use the identified pickup’s own lead map and verify it against the supplied sample.

Does a successful installation prove every guitar configuration?

No. Record the tested instrument and control layout. Review another layout separately before adding it to product instructions.
